This workshop is a full day interactive experience with the Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach. Teachers will discuss the needs of ELL students and become familiar with how these needs are addressed by the five phases of CALLA instruction. Discussion of the teacher's own learning strategies will expand to examination of their students' learning strategies and identification of which strategies lead to success in academic use of language and this process. A demonstration of a CALLA lesson shows how to facilitate effective language use within the core content area subjects such as Math, Science, and Social Studies. Participants will collaborate to develop CALLA lessons for their grade level and construct a network to support implementation of CALLA within their school.
The version of this workshop that is specially tailored for New York City public schools will help teachers to meet the reform mandate to improve and strengthen instruction for ELL students and raise achievement among ELL students in the core curriculum through the implementation of best practices in second language teaching.
